The Similaun ski tour
An adventure for ski touring beginners
When is the best time for a ski tour on the Similaun?
When planning a ski tour in the Ötztal Alps, particularly to the Similaun mountain at 3,592 metres above sea level, timing is everything. The best time to go depends on current weather and snow conditions, which you absolutely must check before setting off.
The Similaun ski tour from Vent is perfect for sure-footed, glacier-experienced ski tour enthusiasts looking for a thrilling, high-altitude experience. The route features gentle slopes and a relatively low risk of crevasses, making it ideal for beginners with solid skiing skills and good physical fitness. The ski tour starts at the Martin Busch mountain hut, which you can reach in about two and a half hours from Vent. From the hut, you’ll ski along the valley floor towards one of two glacier routes – the western or eastern slope. We recommend the western route, which is flatter and has fewer crevasses when snow conditions are right. After the initial climb, you’ll reach a steeper section just below the upper glacier. From there, continue to the ski depot below the summit ridge, where, depending on conditions, you can put on your crampons for the final climb to the summit of the Similaun.
